Appointments can be made by coming to reception or by telephoning our receptionists who are on duty from 8.00am until 6.00pm. You may choose to make an appointment to see any of the nurses or doctors. For very urgent problems consultations are available on the same day. For non-urgent problems, you can usually expect to see a doctor within two working days. For follow-up consultations or to see a doctor of your choice, you may expect to wait a little longer. We recommend that you let the receptionist know if more than one person needs to be seen or there is a complicated problem so we can give you a longer appointment if necessary.
You can help us and other patients by:
1. Being on time for appointments
2. Letting us know in reasonable time if you need to cancel.
3. Remember that in order to help you best, we can usually only deal with one problem at a time in the appointment time available.
Home visits - Remember if you have an urgent problem we can usually see you more quickly if you attend the surgery. However we can visit you at home if your condition means that you are unable to attend the surgery. The duty doctor may speak with you to assess the urgency of the problem.
Out of Hours Emergencies
When the surgery is closed your call is automatically diverted to the Prime Care Out of Hours Service where your problem will be assessed and appropriate action taken. You may also contact NHS Direct on 0845 4647 for advice.
The practice nurses can be seen by appointment. Advice and treatments offered include:
Asthma management Blood pressure control
Family planning Cervical smears
Holiday advice and vaccinations Dietary advice
Immunisations Dressings
Menopause management
Cervical Smears
To reduce the risk of cervical cancer, it is advised that smear tests are performed every three years on all women between the ages of 25 and 65. It is sometimes necessary to perform smear tests more often than this.
The Health Authority will notify you when your test is due.
If you have any questions regarding smear tests please feel free to discuss them with the practice nurses or doctors.
Family Planning
The doctors and nurses provide advice on all aspects of family planning. Caps and coils can be fitted at the surgery.
Child Health Clinic
This clinic is held on Wednesdays 2.00 to 3.30pm with a doctor, health visitor and practice nurse. Childhood immunisations are given by the practice nurse and the health visitor assesses development, performs pre-school assessments and is available for general advice. A doctor is available for consultations but please remember this is a "well baby clinic". If your child is ill it is important that you attend one of the ordinary doctors' surgeries, to prevent spread of infection to the other well babies.
Diabetic Clinic
These are run by the practice nurses and take place on a regular basis. For further details please enquire at reception.
Phlebotomist
They carry out blood tests, blood pressure control, smoking cessation, ECGs and weight control. Working under the supervision of the practice nurses.
Maternity
All the doctors at the surgery provide antenatal and postnatal care. Throughout your pregnancy the doctors and midwives work closely with each other. Please consult your GP if you think you may be pregnant and they will be able to discuss your antenatal care in more detail.
Minor Surgery
Minor surgical procedures are performed at the surgery.
Anticoagulation Clinic
We have an in-house monitoring service for patients taking warfarin.
Manipulation
Manipulative techniques for some back problems are performed, where appropriate, by one of the doctors. Please enquire at reception if you think this might help you.
Non-NHS Examinations
Medicals can be arranged by appointment. Charges are made in line with BMA recommendations.
Mammography
This screening test for breast cancer is now offered to our female patients between the ages of 50 and 64. You will be notified by the Hereford Breast Screening Service by post when this is due.
They will also write to you with the result of the screening test. Please feel free to discuss any concerns you may have with one of the doctors or nurses.
